The winter season is already more than halfway through and another July in the history books. What a fantastic day’s racing it was. Our crowd (almost 20 people) had a great time. Congratulations to Fieldspring racing and Dean and his team for a very well deserved win. It’s also great to have yet another July winner from the Cape.
Our two runners tried hard but they just weren’t good enough on the day. Diamond Quest made our day with a good win in the listed S.A Airways 2200. Rose and Nigel Le Heup had flown out from England for the race and were absolutely ecstatic. He has matured nicely now and looks promising as a stayer. We are aiming him at the Gold Cup as we feel he might have a realistic chance in the big one next month.
Our team up here are doing really nicely and they all seem to be running well. We have just brought up the 2 year old filly Sun Classique after her good win at Kenilworth a fortnight ago. We are going to nominate her for the Grade 1 2 year old fillies race over 1600m on Champions Day at Clairwood on the 29th July. Floatyourboat has had an arthroscopy to remove a knee chip and is doing well. He is convalescing up at Summerveld and will hopefully be back to best for the summer season.
This week Blue Heather runs in the listed Queen Palm Handicap for staying fillies over 2600m. She should run well as we think she will enjoy the distance. Next weekend sees the running of the Mercury Sprint 1200m WFA and Laredo Gold will once again take his chances.
We have been using the services of Jeff Lloyd quite often this season as he has been riding work for us most mornings together with Bernard who is going to Macau again for 3 months in August. Hopefully we will be able to get Jeff to come down here for the Summer season.
Until then I'll march on...
