A Classique Guineas
“Here comes Sun Classique” were heart warming words form commentator Ravaughn Smit as she shuffled through runners with a late charge to win the Avontuur Estate Grade 1 Fillies Guineas going away. There was a tremendous sigh of relief from all concerned when the race was over. The pressure had built up quite significantly on the Cape Filly, and Saturday was delivery day. And deliver she did.
Jeff Lloyd opted to pull her out from an unfavourable draw which meant she had it all to do racing three wide from the back of the field. Mia Elise took the field along with Lantana and Festive Occasion close at hand. Odessa Stud victor, Our Girl missed the break and found herself at the back of the field while our other hopeful for the crown Secure found herself 3 wide. With 300m to go Lantana and Festive occasion broke from the pack and looked to battle it out to the line while Sun Classique was easily 10 lengths back looking for galloping room. Jeff did not want to send her by herself up the straight so when the gap opened between Secure and Lan Air Ciel she brushed her stable companion aside, and dug deep to produce a smashing gallop up the center to win going away. Festive Occasion got up for second follwed by Lantana and Lan Air Ciel who claimed the fourth position.
The line up for this year’s Guineas was a cracking one to say the least and top rated performances from Lantana and Festive Occasion should be acknowledged in the highest regard. A new class record of 98.7 seconds was set upstaging the previous record of Perfect Promise set in 2002 and judging by the fashion in which she set it, one can deduce their own assessment of the quality of Sun Classique.
Needless to say proud owners Lionel Cohen and Warne and Wendy Rippon were overwhelmed with emotion after the race. The build up was gut wrenching but as Lionel pointed out “You can’t buy adrenalin over the counter” I guess that sums up what this game is all about.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Odessa Stud for their outstanding support of Mike Bass Racing over the years, long may our relationship continue.
We would also like to congratulate The Rippon family on their first Grade 1 victory, we wish you many more, enjoy the moment.
Not surprisingly the phones are ringing and the offers are pouring in. On Sunday we believe there were some rather substantial offers brought to the table for shares and outright purchase offers on the filly. We have no doubt she will fulfill an International career but for the time being we will be preparing her for the Grade 1 TBA Paddock Stakes to be run over 1800m on 1 January. The Pundits are tipping her to beat the colts in the Cape Guineas but knowing my father I can’t see that being the chosen path for her.
As with time the Guineas have come a long way and we are fortunate to have won the event for the third time. Sweet Chestnut won this event in 1980 with prize money of R15 000 and Sports Chestnut had the honour in 2001. Days like these would be few and far between were it not for the Sponsors and we would like to thank Toni and Lindy Taberer and Pippa Mickleburrough of Avontuur Estate for a wonderful day and may your relationship with this event continue with much success in the future.
Sun Classique was bought whilst in foal to Elfenjer in Australia by Lionel Cohen, she was brought back to South Africa as a weanling where she was sent through the Equimark vintage sale and purchased back by Lionel for R100 000. Elfenjer now stands at Odessa Stud and is in foal to the first season sire Doowaley. She is out of the Japanese champion sire Fuji Kiseki.
The Cape has long been without a racing idol, but Sun Classique is doing a lot to secure her bid as the new Cape hero. Something the racing industry could always do with. Touch Wood, but for now lets all enjoy the ride.
