The Pocket Parade

July has been such a busy month and there is so much to report since our last newsletter. We’ve had the Durban July, Champions Cup day at Clairwood and the Western Cape annual awards evening at Spier to mention a few of the months highlights. It has been another sensational season for Pocket Power and as our star heads off for a worthy rest he has a lot to be proud of this month.

The Vodacom Durban July, Africa’s most prestigious, was the first on his agenda. Under top weight he fought hard to record a gutsy win with Dancers Daughter and the pair could not be separated at the line.

This achievement has matched Pocket Power to the Syd Laird trained Politician, by winning consecutive J&B Met’s and the Durban July.

Pocket Power’s triumph gave Mike his third July victory, having won it previously with Trademark in 2002 and Dunford in 2005.

Possibly our most promising filly since the departure of Sun Classique is Consensual, who fought on gamely despite the poor draw of 16 to win the group 1 Golden Slipper on July day. It’s the first occurrence in the races history that a filly has won from this draw and the daughter of Camden Park has now recorded five wins from seven starts for her owner and breeder Mrs Jean Jaffee earning her the title of female juvenile filly of the year.

Moving on to the Champions Cup and another very valiant effort from Pocket Power finishing only half a length behind Sean Tarry’s Buy and Sell. There were a few factors against him in this race but another solid performance from the bay and the stable was pleased with his effort after a tough season.

Pocket will follow stable mates Floatyourboat, River Jetez, and Bill Of Rights for a  month’s rest at Sorrento Stud in Paarl and will be staying in South Africa for at least another season.

Pocket Power’s race record for the 2008 season

10 Nov – GR2 Merchants – 2nd (1200m)

25 Nov – GR2 Greenpoint Stakes 1st (1600)

29 Dec – GR1 Queens Plate 1st (1600M)

26 Jan – GR1 J&B Met 1st (2000m)

09 May - GR 2 Drill Hall Stakes 4th (1400m)

14 Jun – GR1 Gold Challenge 4th (1800m)

05 JUL – GR1 Durban July 1st (2200m)

26 JUL – GR1 Champions Cup 2nd (1800m)

The season drew to a close with Western Cape Racing awards at Spier wine estate. Amongst the evenings highlights for our stable, Pocket Power retained the prestigious title of Horse of the Year and Mike Bass received Champion Trainer for the 2008 season. The Jean Jaffee owned Consensual landed honours as juvenile filly of the year. (Results - www.equimark.co.za)

In concluding Mike wishes to express his thanks and gratitude to all his owners for their trust and support throughout the 2008 racing season.

On a cheerless note, our website will be closed until an appropriate solution to this persistent virus has been guaranteed. Future editorial’s from MBR can be found in our column on SAHoreracing.com.

Joke of the Month

On the first day of training for parachute jumping, a blonde listened intently to the instructor. He told them to start preparing for landing when they are at 300 feet.

The blonde asked, "How am I supposed to know when I'm at 300 feet?"

"That's a good question. When you get to 300 feet, you can recognize the faces of people on the ground."

After pondering his answer, she asked, "What happens if there's no one there I know?"
