Candice's Column

It’s been a while since I’ve put pen to paper, but the last month has been go, go, go and things have been hectic. The Met has come and gone and what a fantastic day it was, a dream come true for our stable and for Marsh Shirtliff and Arthur and Rina Webber winning the double (Queen’s Plate and Met with Pocket Power and Marsh the Guineas and Derby with jay Peg too – awesome!). The cherry on the top was winning the Group 1 Fancourt Majorca stakes with the champion filly, Sun Classique, who bagged two group 1 wins this season and a 2nd in the Group 1 Paddock stakes.  We are still living the moments of the day and will do so for a long time to come.

All credit to my father on a superb training feat and in my eyes, He is one of the best conditioners in the world. I have grown up with horses and ridden all my life and consider myself as having a very good understanding of horses. My father is a true horseman, knowing just how much each individual horse needs, to be at his best on the day and believe me it is an art because there is a very fine line between too little work and taking them over the top.

Each horse has different needs and they all need different amounts and types of work to get the best out of them. He is never very hard on his young horses and they are always given the time they need to show when they are ready and therefore most train on and peak as four and five year olds.

We also have a fantastic team at home, with assistant trainers Trevor Taylor and Danny Cobbold who spend most of their time out in the yard taking care of the horses and staff and they are both worth their weight in gold. We have a wonderful team of grooms and of course let’s not forget Mark runs a fantastic website, which takes a lot of very hard work and thanks to Tammi, who spends her days in the office running the operation. Our 2 farriers Greg Dabbs and Raymond Heneke. Our workriders, Belinda Haytread who is a big assest to our yard and always has valuable feedback to offer and also to Fareed Anthony who has helped us out a lot this season. Our veterinarians, Drs Baker and Mcveigh practice and Dr Vere Allin and last but not least  Mom, definitely  “the power behind the throne.” At the end of the day it’s a team effort. Well done guys!!!

We then went on to end the season with a win from Zooming Zellie in the Grade 3 Prix Du Cap, which closed the season for us with 4 Grade 1 wins,  2 Grade 2’s,  3 Grade 3’s and a number of graded race placings, a season that will be remembered for a long time to come.

Sun Classique had plans to go off to the UK to pursue her career, but due to some traveling hiccups might be staying for the Natal season, but things will be confirmed later in the week. Either way, it will be exciting for us. It would be nice to see her compete abroad, but at the same time we will miss her terribly, so we would be more than thrilled to take her to Natal and perhaps have a crack at the July.

We will be taking about 20 horses to Natal again this year and will probably be leaving in April. Robert Fayd’herbe will be joining us in Durban again this year after his Dubai campaign and then will hopefully be joining us on a full time basis.

Our yard is full at the moment and we are waiting for our 20 boxes to be completed, which will hopefully be in the next few weeks. Our juveniles are starting to come out and race now and we will have our first four colts running on Saturday over 1000m all in the same race. This is one of my favourite times of the year when the juveniles start racing. We seem to have a very nice crop of 2 year olds this year and I look forward to their progress.

My horses have been having a nice break during the season as I have not really had time to ride them often enough, but have started the last 3 weeks.

Gold Rush went to his first dressage show at Stellenbosch on Sunday and we got a 2nd and a 3rd which I was very happy with as it has been a long while since his last show.

.

Connell and I are going on holiday with a group of friends including Justin Snaith on Thursday. We will be going to Livigno in Italy for a skiing holiday for two weeks. I am really looking forward to going as I am need of a break to recharge the batteries. I just hope we have snow as there has not been a lot of snow this winter and many of the resorts only seem to have a quarter of their slopes open but the snow report looks good for the next week.  I will be sure to write again with the thrills and spills (which I am sure there will be many of, this holiday).

Till next time

Bon voyage.

Some Exciting News

It’s been 1 year this month that our dot com took its place on the World Wide Web as a miniscule dot in cyberspace but unlike our friend Jack Daniels, much has changed in the last year from our website to some rather exciting news!

The website has been growing from strength to strength and we are pleased with the reciprocation it has received so far. Websites are a vital component in any business in this age, and it has taken us a full year to iron out niggling problems that are inevitable with a dynamic website. We believe we have now achieved where we would like to be, and we have recently initiated the final stages to our site . We are now tipping an additional two venues (Gauteng and PE) however all our tipping will now take place by way of SMS only and we have subsequently decided to open our members section of the website to the public. You will now find regular race comments from Mike at the top of the home page and a detailed list of our horses in training. There will also be an upgrade to our online telly interviews and a new picture framing service we shall be offering.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have supported our site over the last year and hope you find the new system to your satisfaction.

It has been a fairly quiet month for the yard. Our Durban string are undertaking their compulsory horse sickness injections and the bulk of our staff are on holiday. Earlier on in the month we sent out the Graham Beck owned filly Zooming Zellie to contest the last group 3 feature of the Cape summer season, the River World Stud Prix Du Cap.

She won an exhilarating race, returning to her best in a ding dong finish with Oracle News. nicknamed the “Machine” when she first arrived in the yard by work rider Belinda Haytread, as she had no name or passport for a few months, she put up incredible work from day 1 and her laid back temperament made her popular in the yard and fairly highly rated.

The imported American Bred filly won 3 of her 4 starts early on in her lightly raced career before coming up short against top company in the Paddock Stakes and the Fancourt Majorca Stakes, which in hindsight were both a bit on the far side for her. Her Dam, Bizelle was an Irish Guineas winner in 1992 as well as three feature race sprints in Europe. Zooming Zellie’s sire-King Of Kings, a British Classic Guineas winner himself for trainer Aiden o Brien, was a champion over ground winning 5 of his 7 starts, the combination resulting in an extremely well bred filly in Zooming Zellie, and this black type event will add to her already handy stud value when she eventually retires, but she has plenty of racing left in her and we look forward to her up and coming Durban campaign.

The future of Sun Classique still lingers in the air, weather she will be furthering her career in the UK or staying out the Durban season. Lionel, Warne and Mike have been negotiating the prospects for some time now but it seems the decision is more difficult than expected, so we will have to wait another week or so before I return any news on her.

February is a short and sweet month so I thought it apt to do the same with our newsletter. I must leave you with some wonderful news- Candice Robinson, who is currently in Italy has sent us some unexpected good news in that there is a strong possibility she may be pregnant. Why I write with such little confidence is that I believe this is not confirmed officially, nonetheless an informal test in Italy has proved this positive. This will be our first baby in the family and we are all thrilled with the great news.

On that wonderful note, we bid you farewell.

Joke of the Month

Joke of the Month:

An atheist was taking a walk through the woods.

"What majestic trees! What powerful rivers! What beautiful animals!" he said to himself.

As he was walking alongside the river he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. He turned to look and saw a 7 foot grizzly bear charge towards him. He ran as fast as he could up the path. He looked over his shoulder and saw that the bear was closing in on him.

He looked over his shoulder again and the bear was even closer.

He tripped and fell on the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up but saw the bear right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw and raising his right paw to strike him.

At that instant the Atheist cried out to the Lord.

Time stopped, the bear froze, the forest was silent. A bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky, "You deny my existence for all of these years, teach others I don't exist, and even credit creation to a cosmic accident. Do you expect me to help you out of this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer?"

The atheist looked directly into the light, "It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask you to treat me as a Christian now, but perhaps could you make the BEAR a Christian?"

"Very well," said the voice.

The light went out. The sounds of the forest resumed. And then the bear dropped his right paw, brought both paws together and bowed his head and spoke:

"Lord, bless this food, which I am about to receive through Christ our Lord, Amen."
