Pocket Power prepares assault on Queens Plate
Jan 2010 – Many people will be preparing for the drudgury of returning to work as they filter back in drips and drabs from various destinations. Conversely the Horse Racing Industry reaches it’s apex in the Western Cape with Kenilworth staging two historic meetings - The L’Ormarins Queens Plate and the J&B Metropolitan. With this in mind, the attention for many, turns sharply toward one horse in particular, Pocket Power, as he begins his assault on these historic races in a quest to win each of them for an unimaginable 4th consecutive occasion.
As a stable, it has been somewhat surreal to have a horse like Pocket Power. As the lead up to these events beckon, thoughts tend to engulf your mind at every given and ungiven opportunity. Could it be possible? Is he too old? Is history against him? As an owner or trainer, one never wants to peer too far into the future with a champion race horse. We realise how spoilt we have been and how great his achievements have already been. But one can’t help but wonder if it is indeed, possible. The thought of it almost sounds greedy, for want of a better word, but the truth remains, He must have a realistic chance of doing so.
As far as the Champ himself is concerned, he is doing outstandingly. He looks incredible and Mike could not be more satisfied with his progress. He really seems to thrive in the Cape and the visible difference from that of when he has peaked in Natal is noticeably clear to the eye.
The day prior to Christmas, we sent him to Kenilworth to have is very last grass gallop toward his preparation. Bernard Fayd’Herbe sent him along side Thanks John from the 1400m pole and he romped home unextended. No one knows him quite like his pilot, who returned with vigour and seems to think he is at his all time best! Difficult to comprehend considering he is seven.
The Queens Plate is first up and my thoughts and conclusions are this. He has drawn in pole position at level weights over a distance and course that he has never been beaten over. We are confident that he will give the very best account of himself and he will be the horse they will all have to beat. My only concern is if one can conceivably push the limits of the racing Gods into unknown territory. Only Saturday will tell us the answer.
Stable companion Blue Tiger is an interesting runner here and provides healthy back up to the Champion. He has proved himself to be very versatile over the various distances and his fast closing finish behind Thunder Key in the Diadem Stakes was very encouraging. He has run fourth, two lengths behind Pocket Power in the Gold Challenge over the mile which shows his capability, and he is very fit and well. If allowed to stride in this event he will make a good race of it.
Our third runner is Gaultier, a little erratic of late but showing steady improvement in his work at home. A very capable sprinter but has won over a mile in the past ( Gr3 Winter Guineas). He has never been far off Blue Tiger as their records suggest, so if you give him a chance then you may want to include Gaultier into the back end of your quartets.
The Paddock Stakes
Just prior to The Queens Plate, we are treated to the running of the TBA Paddock Stakes, where Pocket Powers lesser accomplished but very capable sister, will bid for her quest for her first group 1 victory. She also jumps from pole position and enters this race unbeaten this season. She also has the services of Bernard Fayd’Herbe.
Mother Russia will no doubt have made the trip back to the Cape a stripped and fit horse coming off a facile win in the Gr 2 Ipi Tombi Challenge in Turffontein, and will be an imminent danger. Jetez has some exceptional back up with Love Is In The Air who super impressed us with her return to form in the Victress Stakes where she finished the race strongly and only 1 and a half lengths back behind River Jetez. We have always thought very highly of her and she is still improving , so she will have a big chance in this event. Croc Valley, is a three year old Western Winter filly owned by the hosts of the Queens Plate day , Gaynor Rupert and they will be hoping for victory from her on the big day. She ran fourth in the Fillies Guineas as a maiden winner and with a light weight to carry should give a good account of herself. We also rate her very highly and she will be perfectly distance suited. She jumps from gate 9 so watch out for her.
Sunsational has done nothing wrong in her preceding runs. She is a previous winner of the Gr 3 Final Fling Stakes over the same course and distance and comes off a cracking win in her last start a month ago beating Ladonna by a length. She has her work cut out in this company and at these weights but we are hoping she runs a good race under the circumstances.
Press
If ever there was an opportunity to market racing in South Africa, now is the time. We have a golden opportunity with champions like Pocket Power, Big City Life and other rising stars in the midst.
It concerns me, in this clearly divided and troublesome time for South African racing as we battle the beast to put our great sport back on the map that this is not taken full advantage of.
From personal experience, it baffles my brain that the average person on the street has never heard of Horse Chestnut, Pocket Power or some of the other great Equine heroes, jockeys or trainers for that matter.
We are, if not the greatest sporting nation on earth, and I cannot find a reason why Horse racing is not taken as seriously as our other great sports? It certainly begs the question.
One cannot find a better opportunity than right now with Pocket Power and his quest for the historic double quadrant. So we call on the Powers that be to introduce horse racing to the public once again. For when a champion like Pocket Power comes along, we should all stand up. If not to shout him home, then to capture the attention of every sports enthusiast in our country.
Mike Bass Racing will be holding a Press Day for Pocket Power on the 14th of Jan at 11 am. Interviews will be welcome and Pocket Power will be paraded and available for photographs.
All press holders and anyone interested in attending are welcome to join us.
Please just be so kind as to drop us an email should you wish to attend.
All Mikes comments on his runners for Saturday will be available on our website on Thursday afternoon.
We look forward to seeing a full house at the Queens Plate, and of course, may the best horse win.
