Pocket steps up to the Plate

The Mother City will be awakened when the prestigious 148th running of the Queens Plate takes centre Stage this weekend.

Jonathan Snaith has taken this event under his wing and what a sterling job he has done in its promotion on behalf of the event sponsors L’ormarins. I am led to believe that Kenilworth can expect as many as 20 000 spectators on Saturday, and there is no doubt that their fanatical marketing effort will have ensured that this years rendition will be the best by far.  Spectators, new and old will be out in force to catch a glimpse of the two South African Champions, who will respectively do battle in the Group 1 Queens Plate and Paddock Stakes, for a total purse of 1 million Rand each ! Of Course, I speak about the irrefutable, Pocket Power and Dancers Daughter.

The time has come to step up to the Plate!

.

The line up for the 2009 Queens Plate is top class. Pocket Power, as you would expect, will naturally be the horse to beat having never lost over the mile on his home course. It will be a big task for the Champion amongst this company as he dispute’s the first leg of the historic QP / Met treble. His preparation has proved he is certainly ready for this race and despite one or two of his regular recurring hiccups these last two weeks, Mike is confident he will be at his best on Saturday.

.

His last sprint running second to Blue Tiger in the Diadem Stakes over 12oom was phenomenal, but the hard going this summer at Kenilworth has taken its toll and his usual foot problem has unfortunately re-occurred. Its not too serious this time around but we have taken all precautions necessary and as of last week we have him back in his pads once again. Despite this, he is in great shape and this problem has not seemed to bother him in his work at all. We will just have to manage the situation very carefully and a decision will be made on Friday weather or not to race him in these pads, which we sometimes do.

Our back ups are also in great shape. African Appeal, himself a group 1 winner having won the Champions cup at Clairwood, is doing very well. He has never won over a mile but is drawn one off the paint and Greg Cheyne will be trying desperately hard to get him to finish in the money.

Thundering Jet has not quite shown group 1 class yet but he has had his excuses in his last two feature race starts where he should have finished closer on both occasions. He is a capable sort and from the 1 draw, will have every chance of running a place if he turns in his best performance.

It must be said that last years Queens Plate runner up Floatyourboat is at his very best. His work at home has acclaimed outstanding reports and he is the soundest he has been for a while. On his current form he is sure to be at lengthy odds but leave him out of your perms at your own peril.

Kapil and Our Giant are miler specialists and catch the eye as the immediate dangers to topple the throne and we have huge respect for both of these horses. Kapil is winless since his return from Dubai but he has run on well finishing 4th in both of his sprints and Stan’s charge will be reefing for the extra 2 furlongs. He should be spot on. Our Giant finished second to Pocket Power in the met last year and he too will relish this mile and could be a danger if he can get over from his poor draw. Buy And Sell is the only contestant to have beaten Pocket Power from this line up and he can never be excluded. Expect an awesome race!

Paddock Stakes

Preceding this event is the TBA Paddock Stakes where the Champion Grey looks to have it all her own way. Dancers Daughter has made light work of her opposition in her Cape preparation and will take a power of beating in this small field. There’s a heroin to be made should such a horse accomplish the task and you can be certain they'll all be out for her blood. River Jetez will be one of them!

.

She is cherry ripe after her two prep runs, and her last run behind Dancers Daughter was encouraging, running on strongly at the finish. She has come on leaps since then and will be at her very best on Saturday. A very tough ask at the weights but she always gives her very best whenever she runs and we are certain Saturday will be no different.

The only three year old in this field is Consensual, and she receives a weight allowance of 6 kilos for this privilege. She is looking better and brighter every day but this fillies season has been really bundled and in all honesty she has not had enough time to come as well as she could be. She is making steady improvement and a filly of her capability deserves every shot in the big ones so she needs to take her chances here. We will be hoping to score some more black type with her for her new owners Bernard Kantor and Marcus Jooste.

The stage looks set for a classic day of racing and entertainment, and one you simply can’t afford to miss. It’s not every day we get to witness South Africa’s best in action, so lets all get down to Kenilworth this Saturday and shout our Champions home!

Joke of the Month

Two couples were playing poker one evening. Jim accidentally dropped some cards on the floor. When he bent down under the table to pick them up, he noticed Bob's wife, Sue wasn't wearing any underwear under her dress! Shocked by this, Jim upon trying to sit back up again, hit his head on the table and emerged red-faced.

Later, Jim went to the kitchen to get some refreshments. Bob's wife followed and asked, 'Did you see anything that you like under there?' Surprised by her boldness, Jim admitted that, well indeed he did. She said, 'Well, you can have it but it will cost you R500.'

After taking a minute or two to assess the financial and moral costs of this offer, Jim confirms that he is interested.

Sue told him that since her husband Bob worked Friday afternoons and Jim didn't, Jim should be at her house   around 2 pm. Friday afternoon.

When Friday rolled around, Jim showed up at Bob's house at 2 pm. sharp and after paying Sue the agreed sum of R500 - they went to the bedroom and closed their transaction, as agreed.

Jim quickly dressed and left.

As usual, Bob came home from work at 6 pm. And upon arriving, asked his wife: 'Did Jim come by the house this afternoon?'

With a lump in her throat Sue answered 'Why yes, he did stop by for a few minutes this afternoon.' Her heart nearly skipped a beat when her husband curtly asked, 'And did he give you R500?'

Sue, using her best poker face, replied, 'Well, yes, in fact he did give me R500.'

Bob, with a satisfied look on his face, surprised his wife by saying, 'He came by the office this morning and borrowed R500 from me. He promised he'd stop by our house this afternoon on his way home and pay me back.'

Now THAT, my friends, is a poker player
