It has been a rather successful month for Mike Bass Racing with our fair share of wins and an even more share of seconds. As we have mentioned through the course of the past few months, the general consensus around the yard regarding our crop for this year has been some what positive and it seems these feelings are beginning to come to hand.
Mike has been particularly impressed with his string of fillies this year and feels that with this current contingent, he will be positive in preparing them for an onslaught in the fillies features this season.
Sun Classique, River Jetez, Star Role, Mia Elise, Balinese Dancer, Zooming Zellie and Blanch Fleur all look like very promising young horses and we are all waiting in anticipation towards their advancement in the up and coming Cape Season.

The team secured two features at Kenilworth this month. The highly rated Sun Classique made her first appearance since her second placing in the Group 1 Thekwini Stakes for fillies, and won the Diana Stakes over 1400m in champion style overcoming a bad draw to win comfortably in the end. If all goes well this season, her first event will be the G 2 Odessa Stud Fillies Championship on the 4th of November, which could be ironic since the sponsor of the event is her owner, so hopefully Lionel can recoup his sponsorship cost here. Next up for Sun Classique will be the G 1 Avontuur Estate Fillies Guineas on 2nd December followed by The TBA Paddock Stakes on January 1st.

Lord Of The Mark was our second feature winner and has come along very nicely as a four year old. His first trip over 2400m in Saturday’s Listed Settlers trophy, portrayed a great feeling of hope in his ability, especially in the company of some seasoned contenders. No doubt he was ridden to perfection by the master, Jeff Lloyd.
Mike showed his enthusiasm when interviewed on the future of Lord Of The Mark and feels strongly about his Goldmark’s chances in the staying features this year. If he can match his consistency with his ability we may have another Diamond Quest in the midst, as he seems to match his ability at home.

This month also saw the conclusion of the Work Riders Series where our very own Shorty Ndzongo cruised to victory aboard Romana to claim the title in consecutive years. Shorty had the series wrapped up going into the final leg by more than 10 points from his nearest challenger William Bambiso, from the Basil Marcus stable. The ceremony was presented by The Chairman of the Sports and Recreation Portfolio Committee of the City Of Cape Town, Mr. Garin Cavanagh. Shorty seemed overjoyed with his achievement and has promised to invest his cheque for just over R12000, in a savings account for the future of his two children. Mike bass was awarded a cheque for trainer of the series
Candice Robinson heads off to the Inter provincial showing Championships in Stilfontein on the 15th of this month, fresh off her win at the Province Champs on Saturday on her prize horse Goldrush, who clinched the Adult Showing Championship as well as Supreme Champion on the day.
