To all my loyal patrons
Thank you to everyone who has supported our new venture thus far. This has been a learning experience for all of us at Mike Bass Racing and we hope the site meets with your expectations. Please feel free to send your comments and any improvements you may have to us and we will do our best to accommodate your needs.
Well, so far so good in Durban, my first load of horses all arrived safely and I am pleased to say that they all traveled well and they have settled in very nicely, it shouldn’t be to long before they all start racing.
It ‘s going to be tough this season as there are a lot of visiting horses up here, over 300 if I’m not mistaken and with only 80 races a month it will prove an arduous task for all to win the rich pickings of the races. There are up to 60 nominations in the smaller races and this will make it tough to get good draws. With this in mind I have decided this year not to bring up too many horses.
Floatyourboat has settled in particularly well and is enjoying the new scenery out here, it’s like a holiday for the horses and like a new lease on life for them and they seem to act accordingly. Float is obviously being aimed at the July this year and I have entered him in the Guineas as one of his prep runs for the July. One of the reasons why I have done so is I would like him to see the Greyville track and we can assess how he takes to the new course and hopefully gain some valuable experience. His second prep run will either be the Daily News 2000 or perhaps the weight for age mile at Clairwood, I will have to play it by ear. Bernard Fayd ‘Herbe will be riding Float in the Guineas, replacing Anton Marcus.
Traviata won on July day last year and I have brought her up again as she does not Winter well at home and enjoys the warm weather. The big Fort Wood filly Blue Heather came along to try and pick up some small black type, perhaps in a small fillies feature staying race. I have the same type of plan for Lingfield, she will be aimed at some fillies feature races and is also a black type contender.
Diamond Quest and Jewel Case will have a crack at some of the staying races like the Lonsdale Handicap if they shape up or maybe even the Gold Cup at the end of the season.
Sporting Popstar came along for the ride to try get some sun on his back in the winter and maybe try and pick up one or two races if he comes well.
I will be sending some more up in about two or three weeks. The next load will definitely include Dunford and African Appeal who are both aimed at the July and will be having a go at the Greyville 1900 at the end of May.
Kelly’s Olympic’s and Easyjadeasy will run in three weeks in the Olympic Dual Stakes in Cape Town after which I will decide if Kelly will be coming up to Durban. EasyJadeasy will be staying at home for the winter season. Wonder Gold might go up as he prefers the firmer going in Durban. Maybe one or two of the babies might just make up the truck load to kick start their careers and give them a break from the Cape Winter. Count Saumarez will be staying at home for the Winter Series which consists of the Winter Guineas over a mile , the Winter Classic over 1800m and the Winter Derby over 2400m. Count and Pocket Power will be the two main contenders for the Series. Hillgrove and Lord Of The Mark will maybe also have a crack at the Series if they Shape up.
There’s not too much else to report from up here, I am staying in a lovely flat in Umghlanga and with the big Sale in JHB coming up I am being kept rather busy. It’s a great time of the year as all race goers gather up here for the big sale. I have been invited and I am looking forward to Mary Slack’s big Cocktail Evening in the thatch Lapa on the sale grounds tonight.
Once again thanks for all the support and a special thank you to all my owners , lets hope we can pick up one or two big ones with the likes Float or African Appeal , and lets not forget about Dunford after all he is defending his title, who knows maybe he could make it two in a row . You just never know in this game!
