All set for KZN

02/04/2007
Author : Mark Bass

Hi all

Hope you have had a good month as we bid farewell to the last of the fair weather seeing as the dark winter mornings are fast approaching. Much of the month was spent viewing the yearlings at the relative March sales and finalising our string for the KZN season.

Mike has assembled a relatively small string for the Durban raid this year of which the first batch of our Cape exports will be heading off this week. Robert Fayd’Herbe, who has worked for us temporarily in Durban for the past two years, will be joining our team on a permanent basis. He will once again be joining Mike in Durban this season. The question as to whether Sun Classique was going with the current Durban string was debatable for some time. Lionel Cohen and co-owner Warne Rippon made the decision to send her to Newmarket, England under the guidance of trainer Ed Dunlop, after Mike declined the opportunity to race internationally. She left for the Quarantine station but 2 days later we learned that a laboratory-confirmed case of African Horse sickness was detected which prohibited her from leaving under government law. Needless to say although we were excited to see her furthering her career we were pleased with the opportunity to have her with us for one more season. Sun Classique, Pocket Power, Hilgrove and African Appeal will be leading the 14 horse string to Durban.

Sun Classique             Zooming Zellie             Sylvan Fields

Supreme Gold              River Jetez                  Pocket Power

Hilgrove                     African Appeal             Laredo Gold

Wonder Gold               Lord Of The Mark          Penfold Park

Manray                       Dunford

Pocket Power, Hilgrove and African Appeal will be contesting a similar season with the same goal at hand The Durban July. Their itinerary includes The Astrapak 1900, The Gold Challenge, The Champions Cup and the July handicap. This seems to be the general plan but it is never easy to call a season upfront so we will obviously play it by ear as the season progresses. Pocket Power and Hilgrove are the new kids on the block since they have both not seen the Durban tracks as of yet.

First on the Agenda for Sun Classique will be a prep run for the Fillies Guineas on the 9th April at Scottsville in the grade 3 Umzimkhulu stakes over 1400m, also on the cards include the Woolavington 2200 and finally either the Garden Province Stakes or the Durban July depending on how she copes through the season

We took her for a gallop with Zooming Zellie at Kenilworth last week over 1100m which went well for both of them although Sun Classique was in need of her work. It has been a little difficult as her preparation has been interrupted due to her going off to the UK so we have been a little rushed.

Our 5 to follow competition will be kicking off on the 21st of April this year and will conclude on Canon Gold Cup day on the 4th of August. Selections can be found on the Website from Friday.

Our first month of sms tipping for the 4 major centers kicked off with a bang. Here is a summary of the major results:

Pick 6: 7 total return R126 579.50

PA: 10 total return R5631, 60

Jackpot: 12 total return R6536.50

Gauteng proved the most fruitful venue followed by the Cape and PE. To receive the tips on a subscription basis click here

Last of all a big congratulations to Mike De Kock on another very impressive season in Dubai, culminating with a cracking 10 length victory in the $2million UAE Derby with Asiatic Boy. He looks a super hero in the making and we wish you and all the connections all the success going forward.  (More Dubai News )

Sale news and Horses for sale

We purchased 4 yearlings at the Grand West Sale in Sandringham, a Jetmaster colt (lot 91) out of London Dolly, who looks to be very fast for Marsh Shirtliff and also a Jetmaster filly (lot 223) out of Gem Queen – her first foal. Lot 37, a Doowaley colt out of Stunning Star bought on spec and a lovely Casey Tibbs filly (lot 108) out of Northern Broadway was purchased for Charlie Mckenzie.

Mike Bass was very active as usual at the Equimark Vintage sale where he purchased 9 horses including the half brother to Sun Classique (Galileo), Saxon St Kerling who was top priced at R1,2 Million. Mike also purchased the second highest yearling on the sale from Beaumont Stud – A windrush colt by the name of Facing Federer. He was one of the best looking colts on the sale. He will hopefully have a story behind him as Carol Bass had asked Barbara Sheppard to name one of her foals after Roger Federer’s book “Facing Federer” and he was the one they chose. The chances of us buying him were already good for a start and the fact that he was a good looking chap made it that much easier.

The sale itself was a tremendous success with all figures up on last years Vintage. The proceeds for the sale totaled R20 916 500.00 from the 171 lots sold. 26 Lots were not sold and 14 were withdrawn taking the sale average to R122 318.71.
