Pocket Power Plans
Pocket Power will be bound for his 4th season in Kwa-Zulu Natal when he leaves with Mike’s string of 28 horses later next month.
There was recent talk amongst the stable that we were going to nominate him for Gr2 Gommagomma challenge in Johannesburg, but Mike has subsequently decided against the move. “His first run back over the 2000m trip at high altitude is a bit too risky at this point in his career”, said Mike. If there was a race over a shorter trip for him, he would have probably had a crack at that.
We have chosen a slightly easier path for him this season and his main aim will be the Champions Cup and Gold Challenge WFA events.
He will most likely have a warm up in the Gr1 Scottsville Sprint before this, and depending on his well being at the time, we will then decide if he will run in the Durban July or not. He is very well at the moment and is back doing some very light track work after running third in the J&B Met just over a month ago.
There is a great article written on Pockets groom Boy Boy Jevu, which has been published in the February edition of the Business Day Sport, by the SAB Sport journalist of the year, Gary Lemke. Read it on our website

Air Combat Dies
It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of our “A” division horse Air Combat who died this month after suffering a sudden bout of colic.
After his Cape summer season he was sent to Arc -En-Ciel Stud to be rested but on Wed morning was found to have a serious bout of colic from which he was not able to recover and was subsequently euthanised.
Air Combat (MR 101) was a winner of 5 races from 24 starts (20%) and was further placed 11 times (45%), including 5 graded races. His earnings were R412, 560.
The talented son of Jet Master out of the talented mare Shoot The Booze, was owned by Marsh and Guy Shirtliff, Wally Britz and Phillip Kahan. He was a firm favourite among all our stable staff and will be sorely missed.
Air Combat’s Highlights:
Career Wins - 5
3rd in the Gr2 Peninsula Handicap
3rd in the Gr 2 Betting World 1900
4th in the Gr 2 Ocean Basket Green Point Stakes
2nd in the Gr 3 Winter Classic
4th in the Thukela Listed Handicap
Sunsational Wins Prix Du Cap
Sunsational capped off another big season for Mike Bass when running out a comfortable winner in the Kenilworth feature this month.
The daughter of Windrush, has been a model of consistency throughout her career and this victory now moves her winning tally to 5 from 17 starts. This was her second grade 3 win, after clinching her first, the Final Fling Stakes, in August last year.
She showed her capabilities at the highest level when finishing just 3 and a half lengths behind Mother Russia in the Paddock Stakes in her penultimate start, and on that occasion was unlucky not have finished closer up after encountering traffic problems in a slow run race.
Sunsational, much like River Jetez, has always been a backward late maturing filly and she has really strengthened up considerably as a four year old. We expected her to run a good race on Saturday but faced a stiff task against the course and distance suited Sparkling Gem, who failed to run on this time. One of the question marks on Saturday was whether the 1400 may be a bit sharp for her, but having grown into a much stronger filly this year, has made her a lot more versatile over the middle distance trips which is very encouraging.
Her recent performances have indicated to Mike that she is ready to join his KZN feature race string and we look forward with great anticipation to how she will feature in her first trip to Durban this year. At this stage a race like the Garden Province Stakes looks a likely target for her.
Sunsational is owned partly by Warne and Wendy Rippon, owners of the previous Bass trained champion filly Sun Classique, and will be delighted with the improvement and prospects of their filly. UK based Sue and Charlie Mackenzie also part owners, and in whose colours she runs, know what it is like to have a group one performer in their silks after having owned the recently retired Champions Cup winner African Appeal. Graeme Joffe and Phillip Kahan are also part owners. She was bred by the Alchemy Stud.
Sunsational is out of the Model Man mare, Summers Sweet Song who is from the family of Eldoriza. She was purchased from the National 2 year old sale for R110 000 by Mike Bass.
Her half brother C Major, is by Dupont and has just recently entered the yard after we purchased him at the Equimark Vintage Yearling sale last year.
