Australia

Mike is thoroughly enjoying his first visit to Australia, and is very impressed by the hospitality of his Australian hosts. The Inglis yearling sale is currently in progress with two days to go and although Mike has bid on a few promising yearlings he has made no purchases as of yet.

Mike’s comments “The sale is a slightly off the top sale and I have gone through most of the Horses on offer with Lionel. We have found a few nice horses up here and I have had a go at one or two of them, but at these prices, so far I have not managed to acquire any. The horses go for a fair bit of money when you begin to convert them and I’m just not that confident about any purchases yet”

On the first day Mike was under bidder on lot 178, a really nice colt by Gods Own out of a Zabeel mare but fell short to Bart Cummings who went to $120 000 Aus dollars for him. He has however, earmarked a few on tomorrows line up and one on the final day that have caught his eye.

Mike said, among their trip highlights so far, were meeting top Australian trainers Gay Waterhouse, David Hayes and Bart Cummings. He was also interviewed by the Sky Sports racing channel on Pocket Powers recent achievements and mentioned  they we also very fascinated by his stable sponsors particularly Interbet. He was also surprised to see the amount of racing enthusiasts and more specifically the involvement of so many young people in Australian racing. Besides watching a game of Aussie rules and attending one race meeting in Melbourne, it’s been all horses for Mike, Lionel, Caroline and Carol who all arrive back on Thursday.

Meteor Shower

Back to Cape Town and the Stable enjoyed rich success in the Grade 3 Chairman’s Cup at Kenilworth on Saturday where there was always some slight doubt from our trio whether any of them would see out the 3200m trip. At any price it was the 6 year old entire Meteor Shower who got the best of the field with a convincing finish under Christopher Puller. Thundering Jet put his ability to stay at rest when finishing strongly from the tail of the field for second. Bill Of Rights travelled strongly throughout and looked to have the race at his mercy but failed to kick on in the closing stages finishing 4th.

This black type earning will be welcomed by the owners of Meteor Shower Mr. Mike De Haast, Anfield Sport (Pty) Ltd (Nom: M Aronstam), Greg Blank and Des Scott who will be standing the extremely well bred son of Danehill at stud in the near future. Meteor Shower has now won 6 races from 21 starts.

The majority of our KZN campaigners have received their AHS injections and our first load of horses travelling to Natal will leave at the end of March.

Employment

Assistant trainer, Danny Cobbold, who has been with us for eight years will unfortunately be relocating with her husband Paul to Port Elizabeth where he has been offered a lucrative position. Danny has been an irreplaceable member of the Bass racing team and we wish them much success in their new role as parents and their new life in the Eastern Cape

Danny will be leaving us at the end of March and we will be looking to fill her position.
