Consensual ready for Guineas test
The R500 000 Avontuur Estate Cape Fillies Guineas, is the first grade 1 event on the Cape summer racing calendar. The glamorous event is hosted by Lindy Taberer and manager Pippa Mickleburgh, and as usual, this year promises to be another star line up competing for the prestigious guineas title. The Bass yard sends four runners to post this Saturday. Heading the pack is last years Champion Filly Consensual
Consensual will be back to her best says trainer Mike Bass. She has come very well in the nick of time after being well behind in her preparations. She has only had the one run since winning the golden Slipper on July day, finishing third to Galaxy Gal over 5 furlongs at Kenilworth 2 weeks ago.
We were really chuffed with this performance considering the amount of work she was given, and since then, has come on well with her grass gallop last week.
Monday morning she put up some great work with Bill Of Rights at home and this will be her last strong workout before her breeze up on Thursday. Despite her poor preparation, Mike is confident she will give a good account of herself here and hopefully she is good enough to beat the lively De Kock challenger Zirconium and Joey Ramsdon’s Mother Russia, who stand out as the chief opposition on the card.
Rose Reserve is sure to have come on after a good fourth in the Equimark Stakes. She is a genuine, consistent type of filly who is at the top of her game and should put up another good performance here.
Temair, the daughter of Tara’s Hall’s is owned by Team Valor leader Barry Irwin and Anant and Vanashree Sing, she has earned her way into the Guineas with consistent performances to good company this year. Her last start in the Pinnacle Stakes was promising and ran on well from the back finishing 4th to Dancers Daughter while racing well out of her ground in the race. She has a good draw here and if she is good enough, could run into the money.
Victoriana earned her merit by finishing second in the Group 3 WFA Champagne stakes over 1200m in her third start. Unfortunately she is drawn a bit wide at 10 so she will need to rely on a bit of luck in the running. Mike galloped her with Consensual and Rose Reserve last Wednesday at Kenilworth over 6 furlongs and reported that she put up an outstanding gallop. She was badly drawn in her last start in the Odessa Championship, but also ran on strongly from the back of the pack to finish 6 lengths behind Mother Russia. She is a smart, tough filly and she could surprise on the day!
Group 2 Glory for November
Grade 2 Betting World Merchant Stakes
Gaultier, the four year old son of Jallad, has an impressive record to show with 5 wins and 7 places from his last 12 appearances. The winter Guineas winner put up a powerful galloping display to edge out stable companion Blue Tiger to win his first group 2 in the Betting World Merchant stakes.
He is the eleventh foal of Danzig mare Elegantly who is the dam of Gr 1 SA Classic winner Glamour Boy as well as the second dam of Gr 3 winner Elegant Blush. Bred by The Alchemy Stud, Gaultier was purchased for R350 000 and has earned stakes of R519 100 for Ken Truter and Marsh Shirtliff.
Grade 2 Ocean Basket Green Point Stakes
Pocket Power eased up close home to score his second Green Point Stakes in as many years. The 6 year old Champion is still at the very top of his game and this victory in the Green Point has taken his tally to 10 graded victory’s and is now the highest ever stakes earner to race on South African soil.
He continues to surprise with his work at home. Bernard Fayd’Herbe rides his mount every morning and reports day after day that his work on the track is just awesome. He’s a real gutsy horse and will always give his very best at home and on the track. He pulled up really well after this race and Mike believes he has him at his very best this year. He will come on leaps from this race and his preparation is going great guns.
On closing a word of congratulations to Mike De Kock and the connections of Rudra, on an outstanding performance in the Steinhoff Sumer Cup.
A very impressive display indeed!
Till next month
