Bass to raid PE

It’s October and the rain seem relentless. The Milnerton trainers have received the brunt of the bad weather and with the commencement of the summer season next month we have resorted to using the races as training gallops to get our horses fit. Tuesday’s racing at Durbanville stands testament to this fact as we sent 25 runners to post.

Having said that, our season thus far has been encouraging. Seventeen winners in two months for the stable has indicated a good start, and with some promising stock in hand we are moving into the season with confidence.

Mike’s affinity to Jet Masters’ progeny continues, and our newly acquired son, in Thundering Jet, arrived handsomely in this years running of the Grade 3 Matchem stakes at Kenilworth last weekend, securing our first feature of the season for Ian Longmore.

There are no features on the Cape calendar for October so we have nominated a string of horses for the Port Elizabeth feature, the Algoa Cup to be run at Fairview on 26 October. Although a rare occurrence, we have raided this center successfully in the past, most recently with Dunford in the same event last year. Our nominations include Floatyourboat, Bill Of Rights, Camp David, Hilgrove, Judged Excellent, Meteor Shower, Naughty Prince, Nevvay and Sky Blaster. We have nominated a further eight Horses for the days racing.

We managed to catch up with Lionel Cohen who brought us up to speed on the well being of Sun Classique. He reported she is doing very well in her rehabilitation program and the decision has been made to try and race her again in the forthcoming Dubai carnival.

Lionel speaks “We are still open-minded about the situation. Originally, our intentions were clear to retire her to stud, but she is such a good horse and considering her progress we have decided that she deserves another chance if all goes well. It’s hard to know if she will be ready, but she will remain in rehab for a further six weeks and therefore arrive in Dubai at more or less the same time as last year, so she shouldn’t be that far off last years fitness levels.”

Encouraging news for South African racing and Sun Classique fans.

Tyron Langdon is making a miraculous recovery from his accident and has been visiting us regularly. He is full of spirit and is very confident that it won’t be long before he is back in the saddle.

Candice Robinson is currently in Gauteng participating in the SA Showing Championship where Western Province did exceptionally well Tuesday securing the Team Championship with Natal the runners up. Candice and her ex race horse Gold Rush secured 1st place in the Show hack event and she has now qualified for the supreme individual championships on Thursday.

Short and sweet this month, till next time, adieus

Joke of the Month

A Jazz Chord

Stevie Wonder is playing his first gig in Tokyo and the place is absolutely packed to the rafters. In a bid to break the ice with his new audience he asks if anyone would like him to play a request.

An old Japanese man jumps out of his seat in the first row and shouts at the top of his voice “Play a Jazz chord ! Play a jazz chord!”

Amazed that this guy knows about the jazz influences in Stevie’s varied career, the blind impresario starts to play an E minor scale and then goes into a difficult jazz melody for about 10 minutes. When he finishes the whole place goes wild.

The little old man jumps up again and shouts “No, no, play a Jazz chord, play a Jazz chord.”

A bit ticked off by this, Stevie, being the professional that he is, dives straight into a jazz improvisation with his band around the B flat minor chord and really tears the place apart. The crowd goes wild with this impromptu show of his technical expertise.

The little old man jumps up again. “No, no. Play a Jazz chord, play a jazz chord.”

Well and truly outraged that this little guy doesn’t seem to appreciate his playing ability, Stevie says to him from the stage “OK smart ass. You get up here and do it!”

The little old man climbs up onto the stage, takes hold of the mike and starts to sing…

“A jazz chord to say I wuv you…”
