News Letter

Its Canon Gold Cup time again, but this time the stakes have doubled to a whopping R1 million. The stage is set, the draws are done and trainers are eager to accumulate the first big stake for the new 2006/07 racing season.

Last year it was the turn of Cape trainer Brett Crawford who took the honours with his Western Winter Gelding Reveille Boy in front of a 13 000 strong crowd. He came from off the pace to brush aside the pacemakers but was made to work right to the finish as the familiar colours of the Robert Bloomberg owned Eurovision put in a late challenge, but it was Reveille Boy who did enough in the end to capture South Africa’s ultimate test of stamina – The Canon Gold Cup.

Eight horses had to be eliminated from the 28 that stood their ground at final acceptance, but the selection panel settled on the 20 runners they believed most deserved to be included. The Cape has another good chance in retaining the trophy this year with Joey Ramsden sending three contenders in Omaha Beach, Major Bluff and Set To Music to the starting post, all logged in the top half of the betting board. Brett Crawford will be set on retaining his title with Magical Ballad who was narrowly beaten by the Mike De Kock trained, Australian bred, Wise Son in the Gold Vase over 3000m at Greyville recently. Dean Kannameyer looks to make it a dream double with Cyclonic and Mike Bass saddles the current second favourite in Diamond Quest who showed a magical turn of foot to capture the SA Airways listed 2200mt in classic fashion on July Day.

Once again every horse stakes his claim and if sat down over a plate of Oat hay and a bucket of water I’m sure they will nay a detailed report of why they all deserve to win, so its anybody’s race if you ask me, and you can be rest assured they will be trying their hearts out.

From our side our hopes lie with Diamond Quest, a handsome Suamarez gelding owned by Rose and Nigel Leheup who seems to be an improving sort, and will be at his fittest going into the race, if he can repeat his July day performance and stays the 3200mts we think he will be right there in the finish. So lets ‘keep em crossed’ as they say.

Some news from the yard, is that most of our horses have all arrived back safely from Durban and have taken up their familiar boxes in Milnerton. Along with the Gold Cup Mike will be saddling three more runners at Greyville on Saturday. Kelly’s Olympics will role her last dice in Durban over 1300m in a merit rating 86 for Fillies and Mares and Laredo Gold will run his usual game race in The Umgeni Handicap, a Listed race over R1000m. Union Chamber will contest the 3000m trip in the 6th race with Jeff Lloyd in the saddle who will also be taking two more rides from us on the day.

The wet has not subsided in the Cape and Racing has been cancelled at Kenilworth today as it was deemed unsafe to ride.

The website seems to be ticking along well now and our membership base seems to be expanding all the time. We have introduced a campaign for advertisers this month and have 7 spots left available to advertise on our site which will be inserted at the end of the month, so take advantage of our awesome rates.

We must however apologise to patrons for the fact that our online payment gateway which was promised has not arrived, we are having certain issues with the legalities of the situation but is currently being sorted out and hopefully will be in operation very shortly. Once the payment gateway is up our SMS tipping facility will follow suit, and we look forward to providing this extra service.

Our thanks so far to Brian Roux from BBR Bloodstock, Elizabeth Mohr from Equestrian SA and the team at our new up market tote in Milnerton – Victory Gaming which looks like a fantastic venue to watch racing from. We thank you in advance for advertising with Mike Bass Racing.

MBR.Com got involved in the Ice Model Golf Day on Friday which was a tremendous success in support of the SPCA and Somerset Hospital which was coincidently won by fellow trainer James Lightheart (again), Mark Neisius and team members. Well done Lads.

1. HER DIARY

Tonight I thought he was acting weird.

We had made plans to meet at a bar to have a drink.  I was shopping with my friends all day long, so I thought he was upset at the fact that I was a bit late, but he made no comment.  Conversation wasn't flowing so I suggested that we go somewhere quiet so we could talk.  He agreed but he kept quiet and absent.  I asked him what was wrong; he said, "Nothing."

I asked him if it was my fault that he was upset.  He told me that it had nothing to do with me, and not to worry.

On the way home I told him that I loved him, he simply smiled and kept driving. When we got home I felt as if I had lost him, as if he wanted nothing to do with me anymore.

He just sat there and watched TV.

Finally, I decided to go to bed.  About 10 minutes later, he came to bed, and to my surprise he responded to my caress, and we made delicious love, but I still felt that he was distracted, and his thoughts were somewhere else.

He fell asleep - I cried.  I don't know what to do.  I'm almost sure that his thoughts are with someone else.

My life is a disaster.

2. HIS DIARY

I shot the worst round of golf in my life today, but at least I got laid.
