Dunford – Our pride and Joy

A rejuvenated Dunford took center stage on Sunday in the Grade 3 Algoa Cup at Fairview race course. The 7 year old Shalford gelding was always traveling easily on the fence and a confident ride from Jockey Tyron Langdon ensured the 2005 Durban July Champ romped home in commanding fashion for the 10th time in his prolific career.

For obvious reasons, Dunford has earned himself a special place in our hearts, and we are overjoyed that he has returned to form so late in his career. His Durban campaign was nothing short of pleasing this year with a 4th place finish in the Canon Gold Cup and since his return to the Cape he has come back a rejuvenated and sound Horse. After his July Win he seemed to be troubled with niggling back injuries for a while but has revitalized himself since then and was raided to PE a sound Horse on Sunday.

Granted he appeared to be well weighted in what one can assume an average field but all credit must fall to his current well being in his twilight years as he seems to relish traveling over ground as opposed to the mile races in which he has been so successful in the past. He will continue to contest the smaller features this season for his owners, whom we can only assume have had such immense pleasure from their pint-sized soldier.

Dunford’s Victory on Sunday has taken his career record to 10 wins and 18 places from his 52 runs with his career earnings currently just shy of R1.9 Million. Good luck to owners Mr. Bloomberg, Champion, Bass, Govender and Wilson.

Fellow PE raider and traveling companion to Dunford, Count Saumarez pinched the graduation plate from ex Mike Bass trained Penfold Park in the closing stages. He too seemed to travel well at the Fairview track after a long troubled spell of unsoundness.

Racing in the Cape has been equally successful this month, in the last week of October, perhaps hitting a purple patch with 8 winners. The Burly Jet Master, Sky Blaster won a cracking race coming from off them and Frankie De Wheels also won a very good race to complete the double for Owner Marsh Shirtliff on Saturday. Last Tuesday was an equally successful day for the stable with four winners.

Sky Blaster

.

October 17th saw the birth of Candice and Connell Robinson’s first born child, Nicholas Michael Robinson. Candice is still at home grasping the ins and outs of parenthood and has reported that all is going very well and that she will be back at work early next week.

The Odessa Stud Fillies Championship kicks off the Summer season in November where we send to post Aquatint . Although she is badly drawn on the old course at Kenilworth, it will be a difficult task for her, nevertheless we expect a good run from her and we will be able to gauge a better understanding of her strength from this very strong field.

Pocket Power  makes his return to the track under Bernard Fayd’Herbe in the Merchant stakes joining stable mates Zooming ZellieFloatyourboat and Global One , this will be his first run since the Durban July but he is well rested and doing very well. His preparation follows a similar path to last year and we expect him to be running on well. Floatyourboat won this same event last year where he returned from a layoff to cause the upset with Karl on board, he subsequently pulled up lame after last years merchants but returns this year a sound horse and we hope to see a good run from him. The Graham Beck owned Filly Zooming Zellie is a very game filly and probably our stable elect at the weights to capture this feature. She is very fit and well at present and we expect her to go very close here.

We wish all Owners, Trainers, Breeders and Jockeys a fruitful Cape Summer Season ahead.
