Springtime is the land awakening

1 September marks the birth of spring. New born foals take advantage of the lush forages and milder temperatures, yearlings begin their preparations for the sales rings, and juveniles stumble into stables for the first time unknowingly to embark on their new racing careers….and so the enchanting circle of the thoroughbred evolves.

For trainers, it’s this quieter time of the year that we embellish most, as we take stock and measure the development of the various selections the year before. We have spent the best part of the last month at the many stud farms and we are keyed up at the prospect of our young recruits. Although early days, most of the farms are enjoying a trouble free foaling season and the prospect looks positive for all as we head toward the Cape summer season.

Reflecting back, this past season has been encouraging. Mike achieved his 7th Cape trainers Championship and attained the great accomplishment of becoming just the second Cape trainer in the last decade to finish second on the national trainers log.

Pocket Power, our pride and joy, had the great honour of retaining his Equus Horse Of The Year title for the third consecutive time while the news surfaced that he will be staying on our shores to defend his Queens Plate and J&B Met titles for the fourth time.

We also received a letter of congratulations from The Queen of England in wishing Pocket Power well with his future endeavours. Not too shabby!

The latest on the Power is that he is doing just great and full of beans after an enjoyable paddock rest and has just begun some light work on the track this week. He has just moved on seven now but the feeling remains positive about the forthcoming season. From our perspective he has done it all already so we move forward with the pressure somewhat relieved and any further achievement should be put down to bonus.

We would like to welcome 3 new owners to MBR this month. Mark Hill from England, for whom we purchased a Mogok colt at the National 2 year old sale, Mark Francis, also from the UK who has a share in Simonstown, a Captain Al colt we bought at Vintage sale and the greatest golfer of all time Jack Nicklaus, who joins another Great in Gary Player, as they pair up in racing partnership for the first time with their appropriately named Jallad colt, GAJA. It’s an absolute privilege.

As the foaling season progresses we wish all South African breeders the very best for the year ahead, may you all produce multiple champions. On the topic of foaling, Mike and Carol Bass will be expecting their second grandchild this month with the expected arrival of my first born child - An unnamed Bass filly out of the Pereira mare, Maree.

Till next month

Mark
