Greasy hair, dodgy glasses... ahh those carefree days

During my greasy backpacker days I once managed a trip between Dar es Salaam and Cape Town on an average of £4 a day.  Since I started to wash my hair I have had the opportunity to stay in some rather smarter accommodation than the campsites and hostels I found myself in then.  Being ‘on the inside’ has even enabled me to dump my dusty, trusty old travelling bag on the Persian rugs of some of the poshest safari destinations in the world.  Yup, I’ve been lucky, but I have to confess that one of the best safari experiences for me was during those early days when I splashed out on a flight into the Okavango basin and spent a few days camping on the islands in that extraordinary location.  I’ve been closer to wildlife, and seen more in a shorter space of time certainly, but nothing has come near to the pulse-beating excitement of pushing silently through the reeds of the delta in a dug out canoe.

Now admittedly part of my job is to encourage you all to spend a lot more than £4 a day.  But I always like to look for value for money in a holiday and I think it is only right to share with you a little tit bit that has recently come to my attention.  For a 'proper' safari experience to combine with a trip to Cape Town, the imagination needn't be limited to Kruger Park.  It just so happens that Botswana is far better value at this time of year.  What's more, there are direct flights between Cape Town and Maun.  “Can it be true?” I hear you cry, “but Daisy, Botswana is such a fabulous destination!”

Yes, you are absolutely right! It is not just a place for devoted followers of Alexander Mcall Smith and his acclaimed series of The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency (optioned as a film, incidentally, by Anthony Minghella) but also for fans of Alistair MacLean.  After all, if you pop into the convent in the capital of Botswana, you might see the Nuns of Gabarone.  Ha ha.   But really, Botswana generally and the Zambezi basin in particular are a very special and different type of safari destination.  Combined with the vast swathes of the ancient Kalahari and the breathtaking Victoria Falls, that corner of the world will always hold a thrill for me, and I truly think everyone else should head that way at least once in their lives.

To give all you lovely people a chance to experience it as soon as possible, I have teamed up with a small local company, Hidden Vintage, which has put together a very tempting package outlined below.  Mention Cape Concierge and get an incredible $100 off PER NIGHT per couple.  Now that’s worth putting up with the odd bad joke for, isn’t it?

Choose from the following camps and lodges:

Songwe Village - Victoria Falls, Zambezi River, Zambia:
Victoria Falls – Just those two words conjure up a delicious scent of wild, untamed Mother Earth.  This wonder of the natural world where the mighty Zambezi thunders over a sheer wall of basalt into the chasm below is also known by its more ancient name, Mosi-oa-Tunya (the smoke that thunders).   Just a few kilometres downstream lies Songwe Village.  Perched on the lip of the Batoka Gorge, with dizzying views down onto the Zambezi River, Songwe Village offers an introduction to local African customs as well as easy access to all the attractions of the adventure capital of Africa.

Impalila Island Lodge – Zambezi River, Chobe River:
Impalila Island has the remarkable honour of being the meeting place of four countries - Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana.  Just a short hop from Victoria Falls, from the air this eastern tip of the Caprivi Strip is an amazing mosaic of waterways, floodplains and bushveld - on the ground exceptional birdlife, game-viewing and assorted vegetation and in the waters outstanding fishing opportunities.  A cruise through the waterways of the Chobe River (famous for some of the best boat-based game-viewing in the world) leads to a private lodge on this secluded island.

Susuwe Island Lodge – Kwando River, Caprivi Strip, Namibia:
From Victoria Falls or Impalila Island it is possible to take a short scenic flight over the Zambezi floodplain and Namibia’s Caprivi Strip to Susuwe Island on the Kwando River.  Here, the wonderfully named Bwabwata Game Reserve offers exciting game viewing as well as world class hospitality at Susuwe Island Lodge where each room has its own private plunge pool.  The lodge is built to incorporate the riverine forest and the main complex has lofty decks with views over endless savannahs, glistening lily-studded wetlands and ancient Kalahari woodlands.

Lianshulu Lodge – Kwando River, Mudumu National Park, Namibia:
Cradled between the enigmatic Okavango River to the west and the mighty Zambezi River to the east, Lianshulu Lodge nestles beneath a canopy of shady jackalberry and mangosteen trees on the eastern banks of the meandering Kwando River. Here, in the heart of the Mudumu National Park, dry Mopane woodlands meet the allure of a fragile Kwando wetland ecosystem.  Lianshulu Lodge is famed for its unique hospitality and cuisine and offers a variety of river and land based activities.

Kwando Safaris (Lagoon and Lebala Tented Camps) – Kwando River, Botswana:
Over the Botswana border and in the heart of the 232,000 ha Kwando River concession lie the Lagoon and Lebala luxury tented camps where the emphasis is on “intimate camps in private areas with personal service – vintage Africa”.  Activities include game drives in open game viewing vehicles (the afternoon drive incorporates a night drive), boating on the river and walking with a professional guide.
At Lebala each of the eight spacious tents is built on a raised teak deck set back amongst the trees.  The en-suite bathrooms have Victorian claw-foot bathtubs and lead out to a reed enclosed open-air shower with hot and cold running water. The endless vistas across the vast plains make Lebala one of the finest wilderness camps in Africa.
Accommodation at Lagoon Camp is in six classic Meru tents set under massive ebony and marula trees with shady lawns and a view of the lagoon. Each tent has a bedroom area furnished in Rhodesian teak with an en-suite reed-enclosed bathroom open to the night stars. The lounge, bar and dining areas are under thatch.

Kwara Camp – Moremi Game Reserve, Okavango, Botswana:
A light plane provides a scenic transfer to the waters of the Okavango Delta - the world’s largest inland delta.  Kwara Camp provides luxury accommodation under canvas and is a wonderful base for unforgettable game-viewing trips in traditional mekoro (dug out canoes).  Also on offer are power-boat rides and game drives, both off road and at night, in a private concession next to the famous Moremi game reserve.

Xaxanaka Camp – Moremi Game Reserve, Okavango, Botswana:
By slicing through the clandestine channels of the delta by boat it is possible to reach a hidden peninsula on the Xaxanaka Lagoon in the heart of the Moremi game reserve.  Here the Mopane forests meet a patchwork of deep waterways and shallow flooded areas. It's unforgettably beautiful and packed with game. Leopard and cheetah are regularly seen and the density of antelope is astonishing. The area's bird life is exceptionally varied, from innumerable waders to many species of sparrow hawks, buzzards and kites.  The special brand of hospitality offered by Xaxanaka Camp delights in personal touches.

Deception Valley Lodge, Kalahari, Botswana:
The vast landscapes of the Kalahari form a fabulous contrast to the lushness of the other camps.  Fossil-strewn Deception Valley was formed millennia ago by the rivers described above when they flowed south to the Atlantic.  Now home to the last of the "traditional" Bushman communities, there is very little surface water in the Kalahari, but nonetheless the scenery explodes into colour in the wet summer to the delight of numerous species of desert-adapted game.  Deception Valley Lodge offers the opportunity to explore the secrets of the Kalahari with local bushmen guides and to learn a little of their extraordinary culture.

Combine this special offer with:
A week in the Cape (Cape Town to Maun direct flights).
